Bar: a port town that lives all year
Bar grew around the largest port in Montenegro, with ferries to Bari in Italy and the end of the railway line from Belgrade. After the 1979 earthquake much of the centre was rebuilt, so the streets are wide and most buildings are relatively recent. A promenade follows the shore past the marina and the palace of King Nikola at Topolica.
Shops, schools, the hospital and public offices stay open outside the season. That is the main difference from the resort towns further north, and the reason many families choose Bar for permanent living.
